The Hess Conservatory of Music was founded in 1959 by Carolyn Hess, the mother of the present director, Jay B. Hess. She was a child prodigy, performing in Carnegie Hall at eight years of age.

She attended Columbia University as well as the Julliard School of Music. The present director of The Hess Conservatory of Music is her son Jay B. Hess, also a child prodigy. He became well known at an early age with his own television and radio shows. Recognized for his virtuosity he was given a full scholarship at the Julliard School where he studied first with Jane Carlson, and later with Rosina Levine, the teacher of such pianistic luminaries as John Browning and Van Cyburn. He attended the University of Miami with a full scholarship and also pursued a medical career.

He finished undergraduate studies at the University of Louisville in Kentucky and with another scholarship in hand, he went to the Philippines for his post graduate work.

Dr. Hess took over direction of The Hess Conservatory of Music nearly a decade ago and under his guidance, the Conservatory has become a major force in music education. Dr. Jay Hess is an official judge of the Miami Music Teachers Associations' Honors Merit School Program and is also a board member of the program.

The staff at the Conservatory is tops with graduates from prestigious institutes such as Julliard Music School of New York. The Conservatory staff consists of many highly trained and experienced musicians/instructors, most with masters and/or Doctorate Degrees from their schools of music at their respective Universities or Conservatories. Many are artists of professional recognition in their own right and together they are an impressive faculty.
